Monolith Soft Director Talks Possibility of Xenoblade Chronicles X Coming to Switch

Could Xenoblade Chronicles X One Day Come to Switch?

The Xenoblade Chronicles series has been incredibly successful for developer Monolith Soft. Since making its debut on the Nintendo Wii, the series — an extension of the Xenogears and Xenosaga series — is known for its complex narrative and inventive battle system, while also blending old and new school RPG tropes in creative ways.

However, it’s the WiiU iteration, Xenoblade Chronicles X, that got the short end of the stick when you consider how poorly the Wii U sold. Like many games on the console, it failed to reach a wide audience despite being a deep and hugely rewarding game. It’s also one of the best games on Nintendo’s failed machine.

Nintendo Switch ports of Bayonetta 1 and 2, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, and Pokken Tournament DX have allowed games that were once stuck on the Wii U to have a second chance on the new console with positive results. With that said, is it possible Xenoblade Chronicles X might one day find its way to the Switch?

In a recent interview with US Gamer, Monolith Soft executive director Tetsuya Takahashi spoke about the possibility of seeing a Switch port.

“Well, the future at present is unclear,” Takahashi said. “Personally speaking, I’d love to play the game on the Switch, but it would be really difficult to make it.”

When asked if he can elaborate further on the prospect and/or difficulties, Takahashi very plainly said, “Money,” he laughs. “It’s a massive game. Re-creating it would be really difficult.”

Since there have been so many Wii U games ported to Switch, it’s sometimes easy to forget that porting a game still requires a lot of work, time, and money. While Takahashi’s response may not be what we all want to hear, at least he’s interested in the idea. And now with the success of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and its expansion pack Torna — The Golden Country, we’d say the possibility of seeing a port on Switch seems more likely than not.

But don’t take our word for it. Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
