Denis Dyack and His Studio Announce New IP, Deadhaus Sonata

Deadhaus Sonata Coming Next Year from Apocalypse Studios

Industry veteran Denis Dyack — best known for creating Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, and Too Human — has announced a brand new game called Deadhaus Sonata from his new studio Apocalypse Studios.

Deadhaus Sonata is described as a free-to-play co-op action RPG where players take control of a House of the Dead steward fighting dominance over the living. It’ll be a mix of “fast action, loot collection and deep gothic lore and is sure to usher in a universe where gamers can explore a dark mythology like none other.” It is being developed using Amazon’s Lumberyard game technology. You can view the rather spooky announcement trailer above.

Dyack spoke exclusively with IGN about Deadhaus Sonata, explaining how his previous games have impacted its development:

“We are combining elements of many of my past games into Deadhaus Sonata,” he told IGN. “Deadhaus Sonata is a cooperative multiplayer, free-to-play RPG where you are an unstoppable force of the dead. There are Lovecraftian overtones from Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, the gothic role-playing elements of Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, where you are undead, and finally, some the action RPG elements of Too Human.”

Dyack hasn’t released a new game in quite some time. He was attached to Shadows of the Eternal, an Eternal Darkness spiritual successor that failed to hit its Kickstarter goal back in 2013. He told IGN that he’s excited to be back making games again.

“It feels good,” he said. “The game industry has gone through significant changes [since then]. There has been a recent shift from the traditional one time purchase to games as a service model. F2P games have been at the forefront of this shift, offering gamers a constant stream of new content, with microtransactions that allow gamers to support the game monetarily. Apocalypse and Deadhaus Sonata are built around this new gaming market. Deadhaus Sonata is going back my roots as we explore some Gothic/Lovecraftian landscapes, while at the same time developing some very aggressive approaches to content, technology, and online gameplay that take advantage of the new gaming environment that we believe gamers will really like.”

On the topic of Shadows of the Eternal, Dyack did comment on it by saying, “After a lot of discussion and debate we’ve come to agree with the feedback that now is not the right time for Shadow of The Eternals – it’s not cancelled, but it is also not going to be in active development for a while.”

Deadhaus Sonata is aiming for a PC release, as well as “targeting all platforms” sometime next year.
