The Call of Duty Grind Has Been Reduced
After reevaluating its tiered progression system, developer Treyarch has implemented an update in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4Â that deliver rewards faster. The exact change is that players shall now be rewarded for time played instead of performance.
The studio recently initiated a limited-time Black Market event that challenges players to complete 200 tiers of progression and earn a supply drop of rewards. However, before today’s update, the game rewarded 10 XP points per kill. Top accolades reached upwards of 50 XP at the end of a match. Several calculations later, users on Reddit determined that it would take 400 hours to move 200 tiers in the Black Market. That’s 23 games a day, which is approximately 8 hours of a 24-hour period, a time commitment most players found to be unrealistic.
As soon as they caught wind of the heinous grind, Treyarch restructured their progression system. The team updated their playerbase over on the Call of Duty subreddit:
“We’ve implemented a change that addresses some issues and rebalances the system across all modes,” the post reads, “and as with everything, this will be an ongoing process to dial it into exactly where it needs to be. As of today, players will now earn Tier progression both faster and more consistently across all modes of play in Blackout and Multiplayer.”
Alongside the new earn rate, players in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 can earn accelerators and even skip tiers by completing new challenges and events. These should significantly improve the rate at which everyone unlocks new rewards. However, the studio highlighted the fact that they’re still tweaking the progression system as they go.
