EA Has No Honor, Apparently
Among Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s theater of quests, there’s a specific easter egg in which Ubisoft throws shade at EA – It’s too on the nose to imply otherwise. The line of dialogue specifically references one of the latter company’s historical blunders. Minor spoilers ahead.
The easter egg can be found in the Minotaur quest. Before you can face the legendary beast, you must acquire three tokens as a pre-requisite, and how you acquire them is at your discretion. You can demonstrate feats of strength, accuracy, and swimming… or you can buy the tokens from ‘Trial Masters.’ The trial of strength will allow you to buy the token for 1,500 Drachmae. Immediately afterward, you’ll find the trial of accuracy from a man in desperate search of his sons. He’ll ask you to find his sons, and you’ll see more dialogue options.
At the 6:40 mark, Kassandra says, “Aren’t you supposed to ask if I’ll buy the Trial Token from you?”
“You want to pay to win?” the trial master scoffs. “That’s uhh…Aren’t you a warrior? Where’s your honour? Where’s your sense of pride and accomplishment?”
The line of dialogue seems like nothing less than a direct reference to EA’s statement regarding Star Wars: Battlefront II. When the company faced backlash over pay-to-win microtransactions and the cost of heroes, their excuse was that they wanted players to feel a sense of “pride and accomplishment.” No one agreed, because then it became the most downvoted comment on Reddit. Ubisoft’s line of dialogue pays homage to that moment.
Of course, everyone and their mothers will probably argue that Ubisoft is not innocent in the realm of in-game purchases. Even Assassin’s Creed Odyssey includes microtransactions for XP boosters that seem like the very definition of “pay to win.” Though they are far from egregious, everyone has their opinion.
