Ubisoft: Gender Choice in Assassin’s Creed Might Be Part of Its Future

It Sounds Like Assassin’s Creed Could Be An RPG For the Foreseeable Future

The upcoming Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will only be the second game in the long-running series to allow players to choice between playing as a male or female character and, according to Odyssey’s game director, this type of choice might be present in future Assassin’s Creed games.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey feature

“I think it would be a mistake to limit our players, limit our fanbase from as many people as possible,” said game director Scott Philips to GamesIndustry.biz recently. “I don’t know why we would go back. We should continue pushing in this direction, bring in more players, more fans to enjoy this experience and make it their own experience.”

However, according to Philips, this feature might only appear in future Assassin’s Creed games that are developed by Ubisoft’s Quebec studio.

When it comes to this series, Ubisoft has a complicated history with playable female characters. Back in 2014, they caused a lot of controversy when some of their developers explained that the reason why there weren’t female Assassins in the co-op mode of Assassin’s Creed Unity was because that would’ve doubled their workload.

And that’s not even getting into how upset some gamers are with how Odyssey’s optional female protagonist, Kassandra, has been featured in the game’s marketing so far.
