A True to Tolkien Lord of the Rings Game Is in the Works

Fans of the Books May Have to Wait a Little While

Today, Athlon Games has announced licensing rights to develop a new Lord of The Rings video game experience based on the books created by J.R.R. Tolkien. Little is known about the project, aside from the fact that it will derive its content solely from the literary works and not the universes developed in other forms of media. That said, the game will be set in the years leading up to the War of the Ring.

According to a press release, “Athlon Games is partnering with Middle-earth Enterprises, to develop and publish a free-to-play massively multiplayer online video game based on The Lord of the Rings, the landmark fantasy literary work of J.R.R. Tolkien. Set in the world of Middle-earth during the years leading to the events of The Lord of the Rings, the game will provide Middle-earth fans throughout the world with a new, immersive game experience for epic exploration of the Tolkien universe.”

If you’re a major fan of Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and other classic tales from the British novelist, then this is good news. As the press release states, the developer is keen on making the game available for PC and consoles. Furthermore, it will be free to play. Since we barely caught word of this partnership between Athlon Games in Middle-earth enterprises today, I imagine the new MMO won’t be available until the next generation of console launches.
