Spyro Fan Game Hit With Cease And Desist

Another One Bites The Dust

The problem with fan games is that they are slightly illegal. The problem with Spyro fan games is that they are more or less guaranteed to be noticed, what with the remastered versions coming out in less than two months. To that end, a fan project called Spyro: Myths Awaken was hit with a cease and desist.

Spyro fan game

This is the curse of fan projects. As soon as they get good and promising, they gather attention. This means that lawyers and other big-wigs start eyeing the thing, and then it’s doomed. Countless fan games starring Nintendo properties have met this same fate. With the franchise squarely in the spotlight this was only a matter of time.

So what happens to these doomed games? Do they fade into obscurity and the mists of time? Goodness, no. The creators make enough changes to avoid being legally liable, then they re-release it as a brand new, independent game with a wholly original concept, characters and storyline. Of course, not every game can survive this rebirth, but at least the creators won’t get sued into oblivion for making it. With Myths Awaken going in this direction, perhaps we’ll see this project again in the near future.
