Questions Surface Around Fallout 76 Cross-Play, and Bethesda Responds

The Wasteland May Not Be All-Inclusive

By now youโ€™ve heard that Sony has greenlit Fortnite cross-play. If not, read up on the news here. With the long-awaited accessibility out of the way, the floodgates have seemingly opened and folks are asking about the feature for other games. Thatโ€™s the case for Fallout 76, at least, an online wasteland that looks dead yet ripe for multi-platform interactions. Well, Bethesda has delivered a response.

Fallout 76 beta

Despite Sonyโ€™s concession with Fortnite, Bethesda doesnโ€™t have their finger on the trigger of cross-play accessibility. The publisherโ€™s VP of marketing, Pete Hines, tweeted a response to the sudden demand and declared that there are currently no plans.

Thatโ€™s not to say cross-play for Fallout 76 will never happen. In the past, Bethesda Softworks went out of their way to make mods available for the PlayStation 4, despite Sonyโ€™s wall of opposition. Today, Fallout 4 mods are available across all platforms, as are Fortnite servers. If the demand is high enough, thereโ€™s no ruling out a wasteland that holds PS4 and Xbox One users. We have to experience a smooth beta rollout, first, followed by the launch of the game. Afterward, we can anticipate news on cross-play and what that may look like.

I should add, however, that I donโ€™t think Sony is suddenly open to cross-play for every online game. Fortnite may be the exception, one that resulted from fan backlash, but only time will tell where todayโ€™s events will take us. Keep it locked for updates as they come.
