Treyarch Developer Explains Why Black Ops 4 Has No Campaign

A Call of Duty Game With No Campaign Would Be A First for the Series

The lack of a singleplayer campaign in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has been met with a mixed reaction among Call of Duty fans. While some are fine with the change, others worry that the franchise is changing for the worse due to an increased focus on multiplayer. On Friday, a Treyarch developer tried to quell these concerns in an extensive interview with Eurogamer.

Dan Bunting, the co-studio head at Treyarch, explained that they wanted to mix things up with the next Call of Duty game and pointed to the amount of players who were playing Call of Duty’s online modes as a reason for why there’s no singleplayer campaign.

“We see more and more players spending more time with multiplayer and zombies, not just in the game, but out of the game, streaming and talking about it in forums,” Bunting said to Eurogamer. “It’s generated a really huge crowd response. The decision was, we wanted to make a different style of game this time.”

“I think change is always going to be hard for people,” Bunting also said. “I would say to our fans, Treyarch has never let you down over the years.”

“This is a studio you know is always going to deliver the best of the experiences you know and love,” Bunting continued, “especially with the Black Ops series. We are delivering so much more of what players spend most of their time doing in our games in the series.”

Bunting also denied that Treyarch had been working on a singleplayer campaign and were forced to scrap it due to not having enough time to work on it.

“Going back to the very beginning of Black Ops 4 development, we never had set out to make a traditional campaign,” Bunting said.

“There was never a traditional campaign. We’ve always wanted to tell stories in different ways,” he also said when asked again about the campaign’s rumored existence.

Though there’s no campaign in Black Ops 4, there will be “narrative” solo missions for players to undertake.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is scheduled to come out on October 12th for the PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
