Nintendo’s Popular Re-Release Debuts at No.2
Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze has debuted well in the UK charts, though it is technically a re-release. Unlike before, however, the game has benefitted from the larger install base of the Nintendo Switch. Despite that, it was still overtaken by PlayStation 4 exclusive God of War.
Nintendo’s revamped title was the only new game to break in the top 40 best-sellers, according to gamesindustry.biz. That’s without counting the 44 copies sold on the Wii U. Compared to its console predecessor, Donkey Kong sold 53.7% more physical units this time around. The numbers only demonstrated the dwarfing popularity of the Nintendo Switch, which might justify more Wii U ports for the hybrid console.
With Tropical Freeze peaking at no.2 on the charts, we see God of War retain its position at no.1 for its third week in a row. Thus, it is the first Sony exclusive to top three consecutive weeks since The Last of Us. It retains its position even after falling 56% week-on-week sales. Nevertheless, with no major titles releasing next week, God of War could see the fourth week.
Last Week | This Week | Title |
---|---|---|
1 | 1 | God of War |
Re-Entry | 2 | Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze |
2 | 3 | Far Cry 5 |
4 | 4 | FIFA 18 |
5 | 5 | Mario Kart 8: Deluxe |
12 | 6 | LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 |
6 | 7 | Fallout 4 |
9 | 8 | PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds |
11 | 9 | Star Wars Battlefront II |
9 | 10 | Super Mario Odyssey |
Far cry 5 has managed to remain a popular title, alongside many of the usual suspects. Then there’s LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2, whose boost in sales may be explained by the success of Avengers: Infinity War. A total of three Nintendo exclusive titles gild the top 10, which could rise to four with the release of Hyrule Warriors. We’ll see how the list shifts in the coming weeks, after the release of exclusive like State of Decay 2 and Detroit: Become Human. Stay tuned for updates.
