Rocket League Patch on Switch Adds New Options for Performance and Quality

Rocket League on Switch Now Looks a Heckuva Lot Better

The latest patch for Rocket League, version 1.0.5, is a doozy, adding a bunch of new features such as creating and joining Tournaments. But it’s the Nintendo Switch version of the game that gets a welcome visual upgrade thanks to a new Quality Mode that bumps up the resolution of the game, but at the cost of a reduced framerate.

While Rocket League on Switch may currently run at a buttery smooth 60 fps, the resolution is drastically reduced when compared to other versions of the game. According to their analysis at launch, Digital Foundry found that the in-game resolution on Switch would dynamically change from 720p to 576p. If playing docked, the game would maintain at a stable 720p for the majority of the time, while in handheld mode it would stay firm at 576p. This was all in favour of maintaining a solid 60 fps no matter how you chose to play.

With the new patch, Psyonix has now added a new Quality Mode in the game’s video options, giving players — for the first time — a choice to play between Performance Mode and Quality Mode.

Performance Mode is much like it’s always been with the exception that Psyonix has managed to improve resolution to 900p when docked, keep 720p in handheld, and still maintain 60 fps. Quality Mode, on the other hand, bumps the docked resolution to 1080p, 720p in handheld, but at a lower 30 fps. Quality Mode also enables several new graphics features not seen in Performance Mode like lens flares, light shafts, dynamic shadows, and depth of field.

Version 1.0.5 also adds video capture on Switch. To take advantage of it, simply press and hold the Share button on the left Joy-Con and the last 30 seconds of gameplay will be saved in the Switch’s Album section.
