E3 2018 According to Phil Spencer
It’s a new year, and no one really knows what happened to February, so we’re in March and talking about June. The hot topic is whether Xbox will have more support from Japanese developers, thereby reaching out to a Japanese audience. Obviously, there was an opportunity with Platinum Games and Scalebound, but that ship has sailed. Phil Spencer, however, seems optimistic.
At least year’s E3, we saw Dragon Ball FighterZ, a Bandai Namco game, showcased on the Xbox stage. Spencer mentioned this and that E3 2018 is looking good for Japanese support. He said as much on Twitter, where he was asked multiple questions about what fans should expect at the mega event. Spencer also said that Xbox is doing things differently this time around. How so? Whatever it is, it sounds like all the big executives at Microsoft are discussing E3 and post-event “innovation.”
Last year was fun for games published by Japanese publishers on our stage. Xbox fans were incredible during moments like DBZ, publishers pay attention to that, feeling good about support.

Like I said, been pretty busy lately 🙂 This is the topic for us. Industry continues to grow and evolve, lot’s of innovation happening, more people playing than ever etc. Good times.

I like the E3 plan this year, doing some different things which I think will be good. I think we have to continue to evolve, excite, learn and get better. I feel like we will do all of these this year.

Spencer also responded to questions about mouse and keyboard support. While it’s highly desirable, it’s also not manageable for most titles. It may come in the future but the Xbox exec has emphasized that players should not expect support for existing games. The game has to be built specifically for the mouse and keyboard. Last but not least, Spencer stated that Steam is not likely to reach the Xbox Marketplace.
Not a policy thing. I worry when people hear k&m support that they think existing XB1 games would support this input. They would not. Today’s XB1 games support controller only, any k&m support would require a game that specifically looked for this input.

This isn’t likely to happen. Steam games are win32 exes written for Windows. X is a custom SoC console (based on AMD) so the Steam games in their current form wouldn’t run. Sorry.
