State of Decay 2 Is Almost Upon Us
Microsoft has confirmed the release date and price of Undead Labs’ State of Decay 2. The zombie-survival RPG will hit stores on May 22. It will be available for Xbox One, Play Anywhere, and through the Xbox Game Pass. The standard edition will be $29.99 and the Ultimate Edition will be $49.99.
“Our goal is to build a long-term relationship with the State of Decay community and to foster deeper experiences with the franchise,” said Aaron Greenberg, Microsoft’s GM of Games Marketing, on the low price. “We believe State of Decay 2 accomplishes this goal by immersing fans in the ultimate zombie survival fantasy, and we want to give more players the opportunity to join in and experience this unique game.”
Jeff Strain, CEO of Undead Labs, describes the series’ influences.
“Inspiration for us is always the really well done, big, open-world games. Red Dead Redemption, the GTAs – those games do a phenomenal job of making you feel like you’re in a world that’s believable and real,” he said. “Beyond that, we’ve actually been a little bit surprised that this genre we’ve built, this survival fantasy genre, is still very much home for State of Decay. There’s no other games that really bring that blend of role playing elements, third-person action, and the simulated world and community-based character development. Lots of inspiration, yes, but we’re also very happy that we still feel like the State of Decay experience is fairly unique within the industry.”
He also describes how the addition of co-op play influences the gameplay.
“Playing with your friends should be more fun, and you should be able to do more things,” he said. “All of those entropy rules are still there. Eventually, mistakes will still be just as costly, and now you have more people to possibly make mistakes.”
State of Decay 2 will be available for Xbox One and Microsoft Windows on May 22.
