Sea of Thieves Is Most Successful Microsoft IP of Generation

Its just over a week since launch, but Sea of Thieves is already Microsoft’s most successful IP of the current console generation, trumping titles like Sunset Overdrive, ReCore, and Quantum Break.

“The worldwide excitement for Sea of Thieves has made it the fastest-selling first-party new IP of this generation,” said Craig Duncan, Rare’s studio head. “Having witnessed more than a million players on launch day, our community continues to grow and now has more than two million players. Alongside this, Sea of Thieves is already the best-selling Microsoft Studios first-party title on Windows 10.”

“We’ve also been blown away by how the game has bought players together,” he added. “More than half of a million new Xbox Live friendships have been forged to date and over 400,000 players have joined an Xbox Club to find pirates to share stories with.”

Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg claims that this new IP milestone for Sea of Thieves doesn’t include Game Pass numbers. He also says that all games published by Microsoft Studios are considered to be first-party.

Duncan also made it clear that the game is still evolving and will continue to take player feedback into consideration.

“We have been listening to your feedback, so please stay tuned for an upcoming update where we will talk about what we have heard from the community and how Sea of Thieves will evolve based on our vision and player feedback.”

“We are excited and humbled to see the community grow around the game and we thank you again for being part of our crew!”

Twitch streamer Prod1gyX has already become the game’s first “Pirate Legend” and unlocked post-game content that other players have yet to see. The status is said to open up numerous secrets, and is apparently “just the start for players,” according to producer Joe Neate.

“As we look to grow Sea Of Thieves beyond launch, we have clear plans for how we want to grow and evolve the experience, but we also want to listen to community feedback about what they’re most keen to see,” he said. “We want to continue to give players new goals to achieve, new rewards to earn, and enrich the game experience and the world.”
