On Kickstarter, Kingdom Come Started with Just over $1 Million
For an indie title, Kingdom Come: Deliverance has been doing incredibly well in the market… for an indie title. But the game, especially if we count costs, meanders over to the triple-A category. While it’s done well by selling a million copies and winning the over the UK, final costs may indicate a not so resounding success.
As many may or may not remember Kingdom Come: Deliverance started its life as a Kickstarter baby. With fan support, developer Warhorse Studios raised over 1 million dollars. Then, publisher Deep Silver took over marketing, and so the game’s overall budget increased. Now, according to the latest issue of Forbes (Czech Republic Edition), Kingdom Come: Deliverance had a total budget of 750 million crowns, which roughly amounts to 36.5 million dollars. The magazine includes a detailed profile of Game Director Daniel Vávra, who directed Mafia I and II. If you’re interested, and understand Czech, by all means.
For clarification, the total budget behind Kingdom Come: Deliverance does include marketing costs. So before you make a comment about all the game’s glitches, understand that these finances weren’t all poured into development. Even so, it’s obvious from this report that development costs were substantial. Additionally, we don’t know if the reported budget includes money from the Kickstarter campaign.
Judging by Kingdom Come’s momentum in the first week of sales, the game was still far from a flop. As a matter of fact, it seems clear that it was profitable. Therefore, we should expect to see Warhorse creating (and fixing) content for some time. Since the game’s launch, publisher Deep Silver was acquired by THQ Nordic, so we have a very interesting outlook for the franchise. Stay tuned for updates on the devs and game development.
Happy gaming.
