Unreal Engine Should Be the Future of Star Wars
In order to showcase their new DirectX Raytracing API, Epic Games did a real-time tech demo using Star Wars. As if we needed any motivation to place a Star Wars game in the hands of Epic, but they went ahead and constructed something immaculate.
Epic Games showcased their new tech demo at the Game Developers’ Conference (GDC) using the power of their own Unreal Engine 4. According to them, this is the tech’s first showcase utilizing Microsoft’s new DXR framework and NVIDIA RTX technology for Volta GPUs. The visuals presentation was made possible through collaboration with NVIDIA and ILMxLAB. The tech demo in question, available below, offers next-gen lighting, rendering techniques, and reflections, unlike anything we’ve ever seen. Quite frankly, I initially thought I was watching a Star Wars film.
The future of video games looks very promising indeed—if this video is any indication. That said, the hardware used to power the graphics in this engine are not something we can expect anytime soon. Time will pass before game engines look like this on PC, and even longer before anything like it appears on consoles. But if you’ve ever contemplated what photorealistic rendering looks like, here it is.
