Grand Theft Auto V Moves Into Top 3
As we discussed on the Press X To Podcast several weeks back, it is no surprise Grand Theft Auto V sales have been fantastic. Just how fantastic? Well, the game has now cemented itself as one the best selling video games of all time, trailing behind only Minecraft and Tetris.
During Take-Two’s investor conference call, Chief Executive Officer Strauss Zelnick, discussed the success of Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online. He reported that the game passed 90 million units shipped, giving credit to the continued expansion of current generation consoles.
Oddly enough, he also stated 2017 was the best year yet for Grand Theft Auto Online. The game had an “epic December” where they had more active players than ever before. GTAV exceeded Rockstar’s expectations during the past fiscal quarter and remains its biggest contributor for recurring consumer spending. Yes, those microtransactions are making the publisher fat stacks!
It was reported late last year that the game had sold over 85 million units; however, during the investor conference call, it was announced the game shipped roughly five million units during the holidays. The CEO also announced that Rockstar Games will continue to support Grand Theft Auto Online with more new content going forward. Great news for the many who are still playing the game.
Grand Theft Auto V is currently available for PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. It was initially released in September 2013 for PS3 and Xbox 360, followed by a launch on PS4 and Xbox One in November 2014, and on PC in April 2015.
