Is It Another Metroid Remake or A New Entry?
No one could’ve predicted that last year’s E3 would announce not one, but two new Metroid games in development: Metroid Prime 4 for the Switch and Metroid: Samus Returns on 3DS. The latter was released in September and received an overall positive reception, including us. It now seems that, according to a recent rumour, another 2D Metroid game is in development.
A ResetEra user known as “mocolostrocolos” has apparently heard that there’s an unannounced 2D Metroid game is in early development. As with most rumours take this with a grain of salt but the user has been correct in the past, including leaking Samus Returns back on the NeoGAF forums.
Details are slim as one would expect with rumours like this, but it’s always fun to speculate. While the 3DS will continue to be supported for the foreseeable future, fewer and fewer games are being released on the ageing handheld. With the Switch generating so much buzz lately, it’s possible that this rumoured game could be in development for the Switch.
Samus Returns was developed by MercuryStream, who previously worked on Castlevania: Lords of Shadow — Mirror of Fate on the 3DS. It is entirely possible that the team has been given another crack at the franchise.
Here’s a snippet of our review for Samus Returns:
“Samus Returns doesn’t merely hope to satisfy a sense of nostalgia, it transcends those aspirations to become a much more compelling experience. It takes nearly everything about its predecessors that made them great and introduces new elements that make gameplay feel fresh and exciting. It may not top the series’ best titles, but Samus Returns undoubtedly brings 2D Metroid back in glorious fashion, resulting in one the best 3DS games in recent memory.”
