The Long Journey Home tasks players with surviving in the far reaches of the unknown galaxy.
Space can often be an ambitious setting for sandbox-style games, more so when your goal is simply to survive. The literally countless open worlds need much fine tuning to create just the right experience or it will fall flat. From developer Daedalic, The Long Journey Home is attempting to deliver on a promise that – so far – no game has quite been able to keep. Players will command a four-person crew selected from a roster of ten characters, each with unique skills and traits. On mans premier deep space missions, something goes wrong and their vessel is hurtled across the galaxy.
The galaxy will be randomly generated, meaning no two players will have the same experience. Supplies must be replenished, the ship must be upgraded and maintained, and alliances must be forged with alien species to survive. Players will be able to land on alien worlds and interact with other species, all while doing their best to make it home. A number of movies and other games come to mind with such high promises. We sit here eagerly anticipating The Long Journey Home’s release – May 30th – in the hopes it can actually fulfill it’s word and give us a truly unique journey of survival and overcoming hardship across the black.
Daedalic has also stated that flight mechanics in the game will not be the usual controls as players have grown accustomed to, rather they will be more like the actual flight controls of a spaceship. The gravitational field of asteroids and planets will also play a part in the games navigation in which skilled players will be able to use that to their advantage.
