Could we See Cyberpunk 2077 by 2019?
In summing up their financials, CD Projekt RED has reported great sales for Witcher 3 in Q3 of 2016. The expansions of Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine have improved the game’s performance in the market. No surprise considering that, altogether, they’ve harnessed a multitude of awards.
“Excellent sales of The Witcher 3 plus expansion packs, observed in the third quarter, confirm that despite having been out for a year and a half the game continues to attract new fans,” said Piotr Nielubowicz, CFO at CD PROJEKT S.A.“I also trust that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year Edition, prepared in anticipation of the holiday season, will be the perfect Christmas present for many gamers.”
In concrete numbers, the game has sold over 25 million copies since its 2015 release.This has created a total revenue of $584 million PLN (Polish currency) and a net profit of $251 PLN. Officially, The Witcher 3 has raked in more income than any of the Polish company’s previous endeavors. You can imagine that CD Projekt Red is now looking to the horizon.
That said, CD Projekt Red Lead Director for Cyberpunk 2077 Adam Badowski claimed their next game shall be bigger and more “ambitious” than Witcher 3. Combine this with what the company stated previously about expecting more sales from Cyberpunk 2077, then we are talking more than 25 million copies eventually sold worldwide. If we pay attention to the pattern of game releases, the developers take 2-4 years per game. Since development began before Witcher 3 launched, Cyberpunk 2077 could realistically land on a 2019 release date.
Cyberpunk 2077, being so “ambitious,” might, unsurprisingly, take longer to make; however, CDPR has since hired several new employees and, according to Badowski, their biggest team is working on the project.
