PlayStation VR Has Sold Very Well in First 4 Months
The PlayStation VR is proving the skeptics wrong, as the headset has sold over 900,000 units in the first 4 months! The VR is selling better than Sony originally thought, which could explain the shortage of consoles around the world as well. Even for those who do not believe virtual reality has a place in the gaming world, it seems that the popularity for the VR headset is proving otherwise!
In a recent article in The New York Times, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Andrew House, confirmed the number of PlayStation VR systems sold. He stated that the virtual reality headset has sold 915,000 units as of February 19, just four months following the release in October 2016. Sony’s original sales goal was to sell one million units in the first six months. Just 75,000 units away from that goal, they are two months ahead of their original sales projection, which is certainly exciting news!
Andrew House addressed the shortage in the headsets so far, saying that he wanted to be cautious with the amount of headsets manufactured in the event that it did not take off as they hoped.  Mr. House stated, “It’s the classic case in any organization — the guys who are on the front end in sales are getting very excited, very hyped up. You have to temper that with other voices inside the company, myself among them, saying let’s just be a little bit careful.”
Due to this underestimation of sales, the supply for the PSVR has been quite scarce in almost all countries it was released in. Andrew House mentioned that consumers, in the Japanese markets in particular, have started lining up outside of stores whenever they know of a new shipment of units. He confirmed that there will be more PSVR headsets available in April, and that by the fall of this year, the units will be available in Latin America!
If the number of PSVR headsets sold is any indication for the future, it seems that virtual reality is here to stay! This news is certainly good for both Sony and PSVR fans alike, as it means there could be a lot more innovation, games and accessories in the forecast!
