Shigeru Miyamoto Says Super Mario Odyssey Ain’t for the Casuals
The internet is still absolutely buzzing after the big Nintendo Switch full reveal on Jan 12th. Not only did we learn a little bit more about the console itself but we saw new games in Splatoon 2, 1 – 2 Switch and more. Probably the biggest game reveal of them all was Super Mario Odyssey which sees Mario returning to the open world days of Super Mario 64, Mario Sunshine, and the Super Mario Galaxy series. Undoubtedly, this is exactly what fans of the franchise had been hoping for.
One day after the big reveal Nintendo did a special Nintendo Treehouse to talk all bout the Nintendo Switch and they also had the one and only Shigeru Miyamoto along for the ride. When speaking about where they wanted to go with Super Mario Odyssey, Miyamoto noted that going for the open world style of play was very much a conscious decision on Nintendo’s part. After breaking down the more casual games versus the more core games they decided core was the way to go.
While all Mario games are aimed at almost anyone being able to pick them up and play Miyamoto said there is a difference between the more casual games to the more hardcore ones. The casual titles tend to have simple controls and the core games just have a bit more to do and understand if you want to really see the entire game. With Super Mario Odyssey they’re clearing setting out to make it accessible but much more tricky at the same time. More platforming elements and a player controlled camera put it above the simplicity of Super Mario 3D World, for example, and Miyamoto said exactly that;
“In recent years we made Super Mario 3D World, and even though it is a 3D game, it is more accessible to everybody. When we thought about making Mario for Switch we thought to make the game something more on the core side, something that people who like action games can really get into.”
Right now we know that Super Mario Odyssey is slated for Holiday 2017 and you can keep it locked to COGconnected for more as we have it! You can watch the entire Nintendo Treehouse show below:
