Nintendo Switch Multimedia Functionality Won’t Exist at Launch, Making It a Dedicated Gaming Platform
The Nintendo Switch multimedia functionality won’t exist at launch, so if you preordered it in the hopes of being able to take Netflix on the go with you, then you’re out of luck. Following in the footsteps of its predecessors, the Switch is charging full speed ahead into being a platform that’s strictly dedicated to gaming. Nintendo of America’s Kit Ellis stated that there won’t be “many multimedia functions at launch,” but this doesn’t leave out the potential for integrating these services with an update at some point in the future.
When a NeoGaf user reached out to Netflix customer support in regards to Netflix streaming services coming to the Nintendo Switch, he was met with a generalized response stating that their services are indeed not supported by the Switch, but they are taking feedback about the situation.
But keep in mind, the Nintendo Switch still has over a month until it officially, physically hits the shelves, so many apps and streaming services could still be in the works. Streaming services for consoles take time and money to develop too. Just take a Xbox One’s local streaming service, which took a full year to launch. Hopefully, we’ll get to see something like the Wii U‘s library of multimedia services on the Nintendo Switch sometime soon. Until then, you can always entertain yourself with the Switch’s arsenal of launch titles.
