Zelda: Breath of the Wild Won’t Use HD Rumble on Nintendo Switch

Breath of the Wild May Remain a Great Game, but This Hurts

Despite past reports of players testing HD rumble with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, series producer Eiji Aonuma confirmed it will not be in the game.  While many fans must still be excited for both game and console, this no doubt comes as a bit of a blow. Considering that Breath of the Wild is certainly the first game many will play on release, it’s a shame we won’t be experiencing the new console’s game-changing features.

Since the Nintendo Switch Presentation, we’ve heard buzz and tidbits surrounding HD Rumble in Joy-Con remotes. Unlike the feedback vibrations of current console controllers, HD Rumble is pretty much a next-gen implementation by its touch immersion. And Aonuma expressed equal enthusiasm, saying: “It is quite extraordinary. For example, you can try to guess how many balls are hidden in the [Joy-Con] controller… that’s something I would have liked to have used.”

As for why his team could not implement HD Rumble, Aonuma gave a specific reason. Through his address to Gameblog, he revealed that the problem was simultaneous development:

“…the problem is that the purpose of the Switch version was to provide exactly the same experience as on Wii U, and vice versa. If we had started to adapt the game to the Switch features, it would not have been the same game. So, beyond the graphic differences, we did not really explore the specifics of the new console.”
