Christmas Sales in Japan Highlight the Battle Between Sony and Nintendo
In Japan, there was much love given to Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Nintendo’s 3DS over the Christmas holiday, in fact there was so much love that the PS4 had it’s strongest Christmas week to date! While the 3DS did not set a new Christmas sales record, the sales topped those of last year as well. It was a very Merry Christmas indeed for Japan!
According to reports from Media Create, between December 19th and December 25th 90,140 PS4 units, 10,098 PS4 Pro units and 111, 513 3DS models were sold in Japan. As a result of the fantastic sales numbers the PS4 reached over four million consoles sold, while the 3DS hit a cumulative total of 5 million units sold.
While both the PS4 and the 3DS had slow beginnings in Japan, with developers being slow to adopt the newest PlayStation console and a high release price for the 3DS, they are certainly gaining momentum now. This could be in part due to the drops in price and expanding game lists as well.
The battle between Nintendo and Sony continue in Japan as the 3DS continues to dominate the PS Vita in the portable console market while the PS4 has remained on top of the game after dethroning the Wii U in September. Is anyone interested where Microsoft stands in the battle between consoles in Japan? According to data they don’t really compete, selling 75,000 Xbox One consoles during the same week of Christmas.
It will be interesting to see how the battle between Sony and Nintendo in Japan will change with the release of the Nintendo Switch next year. Will Sony stay on top or will Nintendo take the top spot back with the Switch? Will the Switch take the top spot in the portable console market as well seeing as it is set to break the walls between home and portable consoles?
