Is the PlayStation VR the UK’s Favourite Virtual Reality Headset?Â
After the PlayStation VR was named by Time Magazine as one of the best inventions of 2016, it is no surprise that the VR is selling like hotcakes. GfK, a data tracking website, has reported that the PlayStation VR is on track to outsell the combined sales of HTC Vive and Oculus Rift in the UK! While the report notes a few reasons, the biggest one is the price difference between the three headsets.
The PlayStation VR is significantly cheaper, selling for $399 USD, while the HTC Vive is $799 USD and the Oculus Rift is $599 USD. Keep in mind that these prices are for the headsets and accessories only. The price difference becomes all the more noticeable when you add the systems used to run each headset. The PSVR requires a PS4, while the other two headsets need relatively high specification computers.
The GfK report has attributed the positive reviews, as well as the fans admiration for the technology, as reasons why the PSVR is set to sell more units than the Oculus and Vive combined. “Early adopters weren’t certain what to expect from a VR gaming experience. The Sony PlayStation branding eradicated many concerns and led to high expectations. Our survey shows that initial reactions from owners of PlayStation VR are positive.” Games available for the PSVR are making a splash in the gaming community as well, with multiple titles featured in the Official UK Top 40 Games chart (as of October 15th).
While the GfK report does not have any firm sale figures from the official websites, the public opinion is quite high for the PSVR when compared to the other two virtual reality headsets. At the end of the day, fan opinion can affect sales, just look at Infinite Warfare and Watchdogs 2, neither of which are selling as well as their developers had hoped.
