PlayStation VR Named Among Best Inventions Of The Year
Time Magazine has released its list of best inventions for 2016, naming Sony’s PlayStation VR among the list. While there are other virtual reality headsets and models on the market, the PlayStation VR gets the glory partly due to its relatively affordable nature.
As the PSVR lands at number 6 on the list, Time Magazine had this to say, “In order to access the most cutting-edge virtual reality, people typically have to shell out thousands of dollars—not just for a headset (like the $800 HTC Vive), but for a computer that’s powerful enough to support it. Sony’s PlayStation VR, by contrast, is designed to work with a console that millions of people already own: the PlayStation 4. That’s a boon for gamers in search of what Sony engineer Richard Marks calls ‘the most intense, most extreme’ action, as well as casual consumers, who now have an easier way to experience VR.”
The PSVR goes for $400 USD by itself, though, as mentioned, it also requires a PS4 ($300 USD and up) and a PlayStation Camera. While it is somewhat affordable for anyone who already owns the PS4, it becomes quite pricey for those who do not.
The list also includes the Apple Airpods, the new wireless earbuds for the iPhone 7; the Dji Mavic Pro, a state of the art drone smaller than any others on the market; and the Hello Sense, an alarm clock that engineers the perfect sleep environment for you.
The PlayStation VR went on sale in October with strong sales, especially in the UK, and though Sony’s CFO, Kenichiro Yoshida, stated earlier this month that sales are “on track,” no specific figure has been revealed yet. Surely with Black Friday sales just around the corner, the PSVR will be even more popular than it already is!
