Blizzard Confirms ‘Overwatch’ LGBT Character Soon to be Revealed
One of the existing characters in Blizzard’s insanely popular (and insanely good!) shooter, Overwatch will soon be revealed as LGBT. The game’s lead writer Michael Chu confirmed this recently while also stating that multiple characters in the game’s roster are indeed LGBT.
These comments come almost an entire year after Blizzard had initially announced that Overwatch would, in fact, feature at least one LGBT character. In the year since there has been much speculation amongst fans as to who that character may be. Apparently, we won’t have to wait in anticipation much longer.
Blizzcon 2016 went down in Anaheim, CA this past weekend and during an Overwatch Question and Answer Panel a fan stood up to ask the following question, “It was revealed to us last year that one or more of the characters in the Overwatch roster are LGBT, but it was kind of forgotten for the next year or so. So I was wondering if you could tell us anything about your plans to either reveal that existing characters are queer or introduce new queer Overwatch characters.”
Chu’s reply can be found in the video above at around the 24:30 mark, and we’ve summed his answer up below as well;
We definitely haven’t forgotten about what we said. Like we said, it’s very important for us to have diversity and inclusiveness of all types and that includes LGBT characters. There are definitely LGBT heroes – that’s multiple heroes – it’s a decision that we make when we’re developing these characters early on.
We do feel strongly that we want these stories about character’s relationships – not just romantic, but familial relationships and stuff like that – come out in the course of stories that we feel really do them justice. So, because of some of the stories we’ve done so far we haven’t had a chance to shine any light on that.
But that said, I can say that we do have a story coming up soon – and that’s not ‘Blizzard soon,’ it’s actually soon – that will address this. And just to reiterate, it is absolutely something that’s important to us.
So there you have it, the reveal is upon us. There are many suggestions and theories floating around of course but until we hear for sure it’ll all remain speculation.
