Legendary Blizzard Employee Chris Metzen Retiring

Chris Metzen Caps Off One Impressive Career

In a rather surprising bit of news today, those on the Blizzard forums saw a posting indicating that the legendary Chris Metzen was deciding to call it quits after essentialyl helping put Blizzard on the map. The notable co-creator of series such as Diablo, Warcraft and Starcraft started when he was just a plucky young man at the age of twenty, where he had applied at a company known as Chaos Studios. Little did he know, that he’d have a hand in crafting some of the most extensive lore in the video-game industry, creating the stories behind such memorable characters like Thrall and Jim Raynor, both iconic characters in Blizzard’s immensely popular Warcraft and Starcraft series.

Metzen decided to throw in the towel after twenty-three years at Blizzard, noting that “Now it’s time to slow it down. Rest. Lay around on the couch and get fat. Well, fatter.…”. It’s a sentiment we can appreciate without a doubt, and Metzen’s certainly worked hard to leave his mark not only on Blizzard, but on the video-game industry as well. In the forum post, Chris notes that he’s not leaving the company due to any sort of strife or frustration, he’s simply wanting to leave on amiable grounds, and that’s totally ok with us. When you work as hard as Blizzard employees do, it’s easy to see how you can get exhausted, and after twenty-three years helping create some of the biggest titles in the industry, it’s only fair that you’d want to take a breather, right?

You can read Chris’ whole post here on the Battle.net forums, but for those dedicated Blizzard fans, it may be a bit difficult to get through, especially if it’s a company you grew up with. Take ‘er easy Chris, we’ll never forget you.
