Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Zombies in Spaceland Preview – Vibrant, Fresh and Fantastic

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Zombies in Spaceland Preview

I am a fan of Call of Duty’s Zombies mode but I have no problem telling everyone I stink at it. Playing the mode by myself, I never last more than 5 or 6 rounds. When playing with others, I am definitely the weak link. Yet, it doesn’t stop me from playing. With every COD DLC I find myself fully sucked right in the Zombies experience. I love the cheesy voice work, the gimmicky horror characters and all the ridiculous over-the-top levels. I love it all! Yet, like anything, things can get a little repetitive and stale after awhile. Infinite Warfare’s new Zombies mode is looking to mix things up a bit. With a new vibrant amusement park theme, terrific 80’s music and brilliantly entertaining gameplay, Zombies in Spaceland is everything fans of COD’s beloved Zombies mode could have ever asked for.

Infinite Warfare’s new Zombies mode takes place in the 1980’s. Zombies in Spaceland transports you into an original storyline where you’ll fight as one of four classic ‘80s archetypes. The story is centered around you and your 3 cooperative characters who are aspiring actors that come upon a mysterious movie theater for an audition. After a series of events the actors are transformed into characters on screen and directly into a twisted nightmare that takes place in a space-themed amusement park overrun by the undead. It is a terrific setting opening up all sorts of possibilities for exploration and uncovering the secrets of the park. Once all 4 of us, seated at the demo station at Call of Duty XP, picked our characters we were ready to begin our play session which lasted 10-rounds (around 15-minutes). We didn’t get to see every little part of the map but what we did see looked amazing.

Like every Zombies mode, Zombies in Spaceland has that progression system we have all come to enjoy. The first few rounds you are simply taking down enemies with your pistol or melee combat as you accumulate points that unlock various doors, weapons and other little bonuses. After the 3rd round, it isn’t too long before you are completely engulfed by the undead leaving you scrambling to find a better weapon. There is a vibrant energy about this 80’s setting. I’ve played a lot of Zombies games over the past several years, but this map seemed to really resonate with me.

Zombies in Spaceland is also stacked with talent. The demented Director, Willard Wyler, is portrayed with voice and likeness by Paul Reubens (Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday, Gotham). Seth Green also lends his voice to one of the four ‘80s archetypes. Ike Barinholtz (Neighbors, Suicide Squad), Jay Pharoah (Saturday Night Live, Ride Along) and Sasheer Zamata (Saturday Night Live, Inside Amy Schumer) round out the remaining characters.

Last but not least in the game you’ll encounter an enigmatic DJ in the theme park, portrayed with voice and likeness by David Hasselhoff (Knight Rider, Baywatch). The Hoff is an invaluable resource as you and your friends try to get out alive. Additionally, the music is fantastic and features some classics from the 1980’s. Needless to say, Zombies in Spaceland features plenty of ear candy.

Of course what is a new Zombies mode without new gameplay mechanics and weapons. Zombies in Spaceland takes full advantage of the theme park setting. You can ride the “Polar Peak Roller Coaster” and shoot zombie targets to earn rewards. Or you can head over to the “Afterlife Arcade” which allows you to come back to life by playing old school carnival and arcade games. New weapons include “Face Melter” gun and a hilarious exploding boom box that you can see in the video above. It essentially lures zombies in, makes them break dance, and then detonates all nearby zombies.

Infinite Warfare’s new Zombies mode is full of clichés, cheesy one-liners and doesn’t stray too far away from the formula that put the mode on the map. What it does offer; however, is an experience that is full of energy and the fresh 80’s amusement park setting just works. Having hordes of crazed Zombie clowns shuffling towards you as they cackle away will only put a smile on your face. Zombies in Spaceland doesn’t reinvent Call of Duty’s Zombie mode but it’s easily shaping into one of the more entertaining Zombie slaying experiences fans have seen in quite some time.
