Nintendo Announces the 2DS XL

New 2DS XL Does Away With Previous, Utterly Doofy Design

Remember the 2DS? That delightful device that cut costs by removing the 3D functionality of Nintendo’s flagship handheld? Well, Nintendo has just announced the bigger, better version: the 2DS XL.

New 2DS XL

Gone is the kid-friendly design of the previous version. We’re back to the good old clamshell this time around. This model weighs less than the 3DS XL, although it still boasts the faster processing speeds associated with the New 3DS models. This model also features the c-stick, the ZR and ZL buttons, and the NFC tech used for built-in amiibo functionality.

Japan will get this new version of the 2DS on July 13th, while North America will have it on July 28th. Two new 3DS games will also be released on that same day, Hey! PIKMIN and Miitopia. The color scheme displayed above is the only one listed for release outside Japan, while they’re also getting a white/orange model. The new system will retail for $149.99 USD and Canadian pricing – $199.99. Check out the full announcement trailer below.
