The Big 5 – July’s Biggest Games and DLC

Oh the lazy days of summer; the days where game developers tell us to ‘go outside and turn off our consoles’ by refusing to release anything super spectacular until the fall. Despite this July being one of the driest months on record for new games we still managed to round up five ones you should be keeping an eye out for.

1 – The Last of Us Remastered (PS4)

There aren’t many PS4 owners who aren’t looking forward to the release of TLOU Remastered. When you get to thinking about it the equation is really quite simple. One of the last generation’s greatest stories plus a better than you imagined it could be graphical upgrade is equal to the latest Naughty Dog creation for nerds to drool over! While it may be a tough sell at $49.99 I’d argue that they managed it with the TombRaider Definitive Edition so it should likely do just fine. Buckle up for the snazziest versions of Joel and Ellie you’ve ever seen on July 29th.

2 – Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition (Multi)

You might be able to pick up on the trend this month by now… if not now you will at number three for sure! Guacamelee, from the good Canadian kids at DrinkBox Studios, (sorry to our visitors from all over the world, that was a VERY Canadian reference right there) was released last year to critical acclaim and is easily one of the best platform experiences you can get your mitts on. With GSTCE not only do you get a significantly longer name but you get some new powers, new costumes, new songs and the supercharged debut on next gen consoles! If you happen to be an Xbox One owner with Gold you’ll even get it for free as your Games with Gold freebie of the month and that my friends is a heck of a deal. If you don’t have GwG you’ll be able to get it for a steal anyways at a mere $14.99 on July 1st.

3 – Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee – New ‘n’ Tasty (PS3/4/Vita)

I’m sure a few of you reading this were barely a gleam in your daddy’s eye way back in 1997 but for a few of us old farts this is a bit of nostalgia that we can’t wait to play again. As I mentioned above it would seem that the trend this month is re-releases, re-masters, remixes and revamps… and I’m ok with it. This updated romp into the Oddworld should be a great way to introduce you young ones to one of the best games to ever hit the original Playstation console. The new and improved Abe’s Oddysee releases on July 22nd for $29.99.

4 – Dark Souls II: The Crown of the Sunken King DLC (Multi)

The Dark Souls crowd seems to just love being punished. Every single time they hear someone state that the game is ‘too hard for them’ they unleash verbal assaults of ‘casual gamer is casual’ and ‘you just don’t understand Dark Souls you noob’. They love their punishment so much that they are likely frothing at the mouth like a rabid wolverine for the upcoming DLC for Dark Souls II. It’s being touted as more difficult than the main game so the challenge will certainly be there. Embark on your quest to reclaim the crown of the fallen King Vendrick on July 22nd.

5 – Destiny Beta (Multi)

You’d be hard pressed to find a gamer anywhere that isn’t curious about Destiny. We played the Alpha and it was awesome… so awesome that one of us might have cried a little when it was over. Bungie is hard at work preparing Destiny for its September release and they’re going to need our help to iron out the wrinkles before then. Hitting the Playstation consoles on July 17th and Xbox consoles later in the month you’ll want to get that pre-order in if you want access. YOU WANT ACCESS.
