7. Castlevania 3: Dracula’s Curse
Out of the original NES titles, Castlevania 3 is the best of the bunch. This is due to it not being an abomination like Simon’s Quest, and it being better than the original in all areas. It also helped flesh out the Castlevania lore by starring Trevor Belmont, and acting as a prequel. If you’re looking for a great NES action game, then this is about the best anyone can find.
6. Super Castlevania IV
Despite the title, Super Castlevania IV is actually a remake of the original game for the Super Nintendo. With years of experience, the action-platformer built on the original’s foundation and improved upon it in every way imaginable. It features gorgeous graphics, tighter gameplay, and an incredible soundtrack. Super Castlevania IV is the best way to experience Simon Belmont’s trek.
5. Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Dawn of Sorrow’s predecessor is ahead of it on this list, but it doesn’t mean it wasn’t a great sequel. This early Nintendo DS game was one of the best games on Nintendo’s dual-screened system by presenting a bigger, better world, but unfortunately suffered from some tacked-on touchscreen usage that didn’t really enhance the gameplay. Players had to draw patterns (called Magic Seals) in order to finish off boss fights, and failing to do so would make their foe regain some health. It’s a small thing, but when separating games that are this great it’s a big enough difference to make it finish number five on the list.
4. Castlevania: Rondo of Blood
Rondo of Blood, also known by the name of its SNES port Dracula X, is one of the best Castlevania titles. Originally released in 1993 (although only in Japan), the title quickly received praise due to its gorgeous graphics and stellar level design. It was later remade for the PSP as The Dracula X Chronicles (pictured), which gave the game a nice facelift, and allowed for a new generation to enjoy it. Rondo of Blood is the best of the linear-styled Castlevania titles that made the series famous on the NES.
