COG’s Definitive List of Playstation 4 Games for 2014 – Part 2

Here we are just a week into 2014 and already PS4 owners are chomping at the bit to get their hands on some new games. They beat Killzone, skipped Knack (it’s actually pretty fun though guys, really), and gave up on Battlefield 4. They’re ready for the first full year of next-gen releases. Just last week we previewed Q1 and Q2 releases for the PS4 and now we move into part two of our list highlighting Q3 and 4 and a few games beyond that into 2015. Get excited nerds… it’s a great time to be a gamer!

DESTINY – SEPT 9, 2014

Quite possibly the most anticipated title on this list Destiny is the brainchild of Bungie Studios and probably has the most hype of any game on this list as well. A lot of gamers are more than a little excited to dive into this one. In fact our own MRBIGCAT thinks enough of the game to wonder if it could possibly be the biggest new IP launch of all-time! An open world, first person shooter and RPG rolled up into one sci-fi epic this one will have thumbs twitching in September… it feels like a LOOOOOONG time until September!

THE CREW – Q3 2014

Ubisoft’s upcoming open world racer looks like it’s going to be a hell of a lot of fun. We got a chance to hit the throttle at E3 this year and despite being early in development it still looked really solid. Releasing sometime in Q3 it has an interesting single player campaign that will have the player infiltrating some sort of criminal organizations and of course a robust multiplayer mode. This will likely be on the list of games to play for anyone who’s a fan of arcade racers.

DRAGON AGE: INQUISITION – Q3 2014

Dragon Age: Origins was hands down one of the best RPGs to hit consoles last generation. DA2 was alright but as a whole not as well received. Inquisition, the third installment in the franchise, looks to set the series back on track heading into the next generation. Bioware are some of the best when it comes to console RPGs so it’s unlikely they’ll be dropping the ball on this one.

SOUL SAGA EPISODE 1 – Q3 2014

I grew up on games like Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire, Dragon Warrior and Suikoden. It’s exciting to see the old school JRPG get some new school love with Disastercake’s Kickstarter funded Soul Saga. They beat their original $60,000 goal by nearly triple and with any luck we’ll see this game succeed enough for them to work on episode 2.

GALAK-Z: THE DIMENSIONAL – TBA 2014

Sony’s indie game freight train rolls on with this spaced out shooter from 17-BIT. Perhaps best known for their award winning ‘Skulls of the Shogun’ they shift gears into what 17-BIT CEO describes as a “Modern Halo and Far Cry 3 combat in a 2 dimensional shell”. That is a VERY LOFTY comparison to make for a 2D space shooter but hey that doesn’t mean we might not be surprised.

TRANSISTOR – TBA 2014

The announcement of this title from Supergiant Games, best known for the amazing RPG title ‘Bastion’, at E3 piqued the interest of a lot of gamers. A sci-fi action RPG gamers take control of Red, a young singer, who has come into possession of Transistor, a powerful and intelligent sword… so I guess that means it talks! Despite not knowing when exactly this one will be released it seems as if it has made the most anticipated list of a lot of gamers.

THE ORDER: 1886 – TBA 2014

The Order might have gotten the most ‘ooohs and aaahs’ out of the crowd at the Sony press conference at E3 last year and for good reason. In the game it introduces players to a unique vision of Victorian-Era London where Man uses advanced technology to battle a powerful and ancient foe. As a member of an elite order of knights, join a centuries-old war that will determine the course of history forever. This Sony exclusive from Ready at Dawn and Sony Santa Monica looks to be heavy on story to draw players in and is easily one of the PS4’s most anticipated titles.

FINAL FANTASY XV – TBA 2014

When you talk about RPG series with one hell of a legacy behind them you can’t ignore Final Fantasy. The fifteenth game in the main series it looks to be a bit darker and a bit more realistic with more believable characters than we’ve become used to in the FF universe. Expect stunning visuals and jaw dropping cut scenes which is the norm for this storied franchise.

HOTLINE MIAMI 2: WRONG NUMBER – TBA 2014

The wildly successful 2D top-down shooter Hotline Miami gets a sequel. Taking place before and after the events of the original, it focuses more on the events that occurred after. The game suggests that Jacket’s interpretation ending is the canonical end of the game. As the main protagonist ‘Jacket’ is killing off the Russian mob for the Janitors, a movement of masked vigilantism is started and scours across Miami, Florida. The story is told through different factions of characters.

VALIANT HEARTS: THE GREAT WAR – TBA 2014

Valiant Hearts is a puzzle adventure game that is inspired by letters written during the Great War and turns around four strangers entering the battlefield to help a young German soldier find his love in a story about survival, sacrifice and friendship. One of the most talked about games coming out of E3 this past June due to its compelling story and gorgeous art direction this is on the watch list of many gamers for 2014.

CHILD OF LIGHT – TBA 2014

Apparently Ubisoft wasn’t done creating huge buzz at E3 with Valiant Hearts and its unique art style because Child of Light received just as much attention. A mix of platforming and RPG the game puts players in the shoes of Aurora, a child stolen from her home, who, in her quest to return, must bring back the sun, the moon and the stars held captive by the mysterious Queen of the Night. Helped by her playable companion Igniculus the firefly and several unlikely allies, Aurora will face her darkest fears in this modern take on a coming-of-age story.

THE LEGO MOVIE VIDEOGAME – TBA 2014

You can’t get much more self-explanatory than this game’s title can you. Based on the upcoming LEGO movie TT Games hopes to bring gamers another successful game based on the toy bricks we all know and love.

TOM CLANCY’S THE DIVISION – TBA 2014

What’s that? Ubisoft STILL wasn’t done rocking the socks off of gamers at E3 this year? We certainly left impressed after seeing it ourselves. A devastating pandemic sweeps through New York City, and one by one, basic services fail. In only days, without food or water, society collapses into chaos. The Division, a classified unit of self-supported tactical agents, is activated. Leading seemingly ordinary lives among us, The Division agents are trained to operate independently of command, as all else fails. Fighting to prevent the fall of society, the agents will find themselves caught up in an epic conspiracy, forced to combat not only the effects of a manmade virus, but also the rising threat of those behind it. When everything collapses, your mission begins.

BOUND BY FLAME – TBA 2014

Spiders Studios gives us this RPG where you take on the role of a mercenary possessed by a flame demon in an ambitious Dark Fantasy universe. As a victim of this demonic influence, players will have to choose between the powers offered by this evil or rejection of the demonic influence in order to develop heroic talents instead.

LORDS OF THE FALLEN – TBA 2014

There isn’t a lot of information out there for this one apart from it being an action RPG game developed by Deck13 and CI Games.

MAD MAX – TBA 2014

One of the most iconic sci-fi characters of all time gets the videogame treatment and after what we saw at E3 we’ve gotta say that we can’t bloody well wait. Play as Mad Max, a lone warrior who must embark on a dangerous journey after his Interceptor is stolen by a deadly gang of marauders. A reluctant hero with an instinct for survival, Max wants nothing more than to leave the madness behind and find solace in the storied “Plains of Silence”.

DYING LIGHT – TBA 2014

Dying Light is a first-person, action survival horror game set in a vast and dangerous open world. During the day, players traverse an expansive urban environment overrun by a vicious outbreak, scavenging the world for supplies and crafting weapons to defend against the growing infected population. At night, the hunter becomes the hunted, as the infected become aggressive and more dangerous. Most frightening are the predators which only appear after sundown. Players must use everything in their power to survive until the morning’s first light. We got our zombie fix with Dying Light at E3 this year and left being pretty impressed.

OUTLAST – TBA 2014

Released last September for PC this survival horror game received fairly good reviews. Known to be absolutely pant shittingly scary PS4 owners can look forward to this being a free game if they have PS Plus last time we checked. Perhaps not the best game to play with the lights off and the headphones on but what do we know…

TRIALS FUSION – TBA 2014

Trials fans get their next gen fix with the upcoming Trials Fusion. Designed to interact with the Trials Frontier smartphone app/game the physics based motorcycle game should be a hit with fans of the franchise.

DIABLO III: ULTIMATE EVIL EDITION – TBA 2014

When Diablo III hit consoles in 2013 a few reviewers made bold claims that the console version was even better than the PC due to its ease of play with a controller. Furthering that bold claim the PS4 version will include the Reaper of Souls expansion pack as well as some additional interface mechanics for the DualShock 4. Take that PC MASTER RACE!

WOLFENSTEIN: THE NEW ORDER – TBA 2014

BJ Blazkowicz is back and more badass than ever in a post war world where the Germans have won the war. The FPS that started it all is looking to make its triumphant return to the top of the heap and after spending some serious time playing it back in May we can promise you that it looks great. One of our most anticipated games for 2014, we can’t wait to get our hands on the finished product.

SHADOW WARRIOR – TBA 2014

Another well received game makes the jump from the PC onto the PS4. Shadow Warrior is a bold reimagining of the cult classic shooter. Blending the viciously over-the-top gunplay of its predecessor with the elegant precision of the powerful katana, Shadow Warrior is an imaginative take on the classic arcade-style shooter. Also it gets mad props for best use of ‘The Touch’ from the Transformers Movie in a trailer EVER.

OCTODAD: DADLIEST CATCH – TBA 2014

Octodad: Dadliest Catch is about destruction, deception, and fatherhood. The player controls Octodad, a dapper octopus masquerading as a human, as he goes about daily life. Set to release on PS4 in 2014 it is being made by an independent studio in Chicago , Young Horses.

GUILTY GEARD XRD – TBA 2014

Arc System Works is set to drop the fifth in the Guilty Gear series on the PS4 much to the delight of fighting game fans. A gorgeous, cel-shaded,  2D fighter you can expect to see it sometime in the latter half of 2014.

PURE POOL – TBA 2014

Not much to say here… a game of stick on the PS4. Something to get overly excited about? Probably not, but hey, here’s a trailer!

THE EVIL WITHIN – TBA 2014

Shinji Mikami, the godfather of survival horror, is back alongside Tango Gameworks and Bethesda to bring gamers The Evil Within. We got to see the game up close and personal way back in May at an exclusive preview event and can promise you that it is pant shittingly scary! Following Detective Sebastian Castellanos, gamers will be taken on a terrifying journey facing horrifying monsters and Sebastian’s own worst fears. BUY DIAPERS.

HELLDIVERS – TBA 2014

Quite simply, Helldivers is a top-down shooter game in development by Arrowhead Studios. Look, we can’t have a mega write-up about every game ok, HERE’S A TRAILER!

SNIPER ELITE 3 – TBA 2014

Scope junkies will finally get their fix sometime in late 2014 with Sniper Elite 3. Following a lackluster turnout with Sniper Elite 2 however, this game has a lot to prove.

THE WITCHER 3: WILD HUNT – TBA 2014

Geralt of Rivia is set to conclude the Witcher Trilogy in CD Projekt RED’s final (as far as we know at least) installment in the successful Witcher series. From cult following to bonafide RPG success story Geralt has built a loyal following of gamers that are frothing at the mouth to get their hands on this one. One of our very own got some serious time with the game down at E3 this year and summed up her thoughts on it. It won her game of show award so it definitely impressed.

KINGDOM COME: DELIVERANCE – TBA 2015

Not much is known about this first person Warhorse Studios open world RPG. Set in medieval Europe we’ve only recently seen this teaser trailer.

KINGDOM HEARTS 3 – TBA

One of the most beloved franchises in Sony history makes its multiplatform debut and eager fans can’t wait to get their hands on it. It’s amazing how a game based on Disney characters can have such a large draw to some fairly hardcore gamers. Join Sora, Donald Duck, Goofy, Riku and more on what will surely be a masterful journey.
