3 – Get into the Story
Classic RPGs heavily focus on story, so dive right into it! Read codex entries, sift through notes, and listen when a character is talking to you. From political standoffs you must navigate through to discovering where a legendary weapon might be, an RPG only becomes richer when you give it the attention it deserves.
4 – Take Notes
Some stories are so complex it’s hard to remember everything, but luckily the game usually keeps track of all that for you. But if you’re really roleplaying, you might be adding in bits of your own story to the world to carve your character’s place in it. So pull up a character sheet online and go to town. This goes especially true for Divinity: Original Sin II, as you play as all the members of your party. Each can have a different background and personality, and you can choose which ones have ulterior motives or possibly turn traitor on the rest of the group.
5 – Play with a Friend
I had the fortune to play with fellow COGconnected writer Louis Stowe, our very own expert on all things Divinity. Check out his preview of the game HERE! He showed me the ropes through Divinity: Original Sin II and bless him, did not stab me in the back. Divinity is perfect for multiplayer roleplaying, where you can adventure with friends as a perfect team or break it up and head in different directions. You can play as yourselves or roleplay your character, balancing opposing motivations and temperaments or starting fights.
I had a ton of fun in Divinity: Original Sin II and can’t wait to get back to it. As for other classic RPGs, I think I will check out the original Fallout or Pillars of Eternity next. For everyone looking to get into the games that started it all, just get out there, have fun, and remember, don’t be yourself.
