In an interview with Forbes, Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Shawn Layden said that Sony is happy with sales of the PlayStation Vita this past year, and that they sold more than the company had predicted.
“Yeah [we’re happy with PS Vita sales in the US],” Layden said. “In fact, we sold more than we had internally targeted last year. We saw some issues in the market last year with supply constraint, which was kind of a surprise.”
Layden also reiterated what has become a theme for the later stages of the Vita’s life – its evolution into a platform embraced by indie developers, rather than a platform for big first and third party AAA games. “I think there’s 100 games coming out this year across the Vita platform,” said Layden. “I think it’s a great platform for independent developers.”
While Layden insisted that Sony has not “given up” on the Vita, as is widely speculated, he did confirm that the company has no plans for any first-party titles in the near future.
