Hardcore game developers just got huge news — Apple’s fast Metal graphics technology for iOS is now coming to Mac, which could make games run 10 times faster on Mac.
Apple made the announcement today at the Worldwide Developers Conference. It launched its Metal applications programming interface last year to allow game developers and other graphics-hungry app creators to more directly access graphics rendering hardware on the iPad and iPhone. Now the accelerated graphics of Metal can be deployed in games that are adapted for the Mac.
The Metal API is integrated into the Unreal Engine 4 game engine from Epic Games, which showed off how Metal graphics look in its upcoming game Fortnite. Fortnite is a zombie-killing shooter and resource management game that has beautiful cartoon-style 3D graphics.
