During a corporate strategy meeting, Sony CEO Kaz Hirai revealed that the PlayStation 4 could very well replace the PlayStation 2 as the best-selling Sony console.
As reported by Japanese website Impress Watch, Hirai admitted that “It is likely that PS4 will become the platform which exceeds the profits earned with PS2”.
Despite suffering billion dollar losses, Sony got off to a great start with the PlayStation 4 with seven million units sold since it launched in November 2013.
Console manufacturers usually make a loss on each console in the first year of trade, with the real money coming from digital sales and network services like PlayStation Plus.
Sony expects to shift a total of 17m PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 consoles combined during the current financial year ending March 2015.
But beating the PlayStation 2 will take some doing, as it’s still the best selling video game console of all time with an incredible 155m units sold globally.
Sony has also recently announced that its E3 2014 press conference will take place on June 9 at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena where the electronics giant will showcase its upcoming PlayStation titles at 1am UK time and stream the event online.
