Super Robot Wars Y – DLC 2 Review – Hype and Aura

Super Robot Wars Y DLC Pack 2 Review

Super Robot Wars Y is the latest installment of the Super Robot Wars franchise of grid-based tactical RPGs. In this series, players take on the role of iconic mecha pilots from throughout media history in a massive crossover brawl. And if there weren’t enough giant robots for you to play with in the base game, don’t worry. Super Robot Wars Y DLC Pack 2 has you covered.

In this DLC pack, players will encounter and recruit characters from three franchises: Kotetsu Jeeg, Getter Robo, and BRAVE OF THE LEGEND DA • GARN. You can gain access to five new playable units by clearing Area Missions.

The new robots on offer are Kotetsu Jeeg from the same named anime, Getter Noir 1 and Getter Noir G, and Da-Garn X and Great Da-Garn GX.

The Getter Noir units hail from a previous Super Robot Wars title, where they were introduced as alternate versions of the classic Getter Robo Armageddon cast. The Da-Garn units are from the Brave franchise of super robot cartoons. And Kotetsu Jeeg is from a classic 70s show often translated as Steel Jeeg.

Rise, Unite, and Triumph

Super Robot Wars Y DLC Pack 2 also features a number of new missions. It boasts 16 Area Missions, 10 On-board Missions, 5 playable units, and 1 Assist Crew Member.

You need to clear the first mission of Chapter 2 to access the DLC characters, and then beat their individual missions. Some characters do not become open to recruitment until later in the main story.

The first DLC level is a sample of sorts that allows you to see how the new characters play. However, they have very limited attacks available to try in this tutorial. By which I mean, each character has a couple unique attacks to try out. But their more powerful moves with special animations only become available once they’re recruited.

All of the characters have pretty low accuracy at first, which is manageable once they’re recruited. However, it’s really annoying on the tutorial level, where you have no customization options.

If you got the DLC set, you’ll also get to recruit more returning protagonists from previous Super Robot Wars titles. You can choose which former protagonist is the primary pilot of their machines, which is pretty neat.

Super Robot Wars Y DLC Pack 2 is a Nice Expansion

Super Robot Wars Y DLC Pack 2 adds some fun new elements to an already fun game. The new units look good, sound good, and are quite fun to play. Their individual attack animations can be as lovingly detailed as the rest of the cast. And the new songs are a worthy addition to the soundtrack.

The character designs are solid, the art is nice, and it’s great to see the new mecha in action. The cut-in CGs are expressive and nicely rendered, too. As usual for Super Robot Wars, this DLC pack features lovingly recreated attacks and solid Japanese voice acting on top of the music.

Recruitment missions are challenging to new players without being too difficult. And you can ramp up the difficulty if you’re a more experienced tactical RPG player. It’s very fun to see the new characters interacting in and out of battle. And if you’re looking to boost a character’s score, the DLC levels are a very convenient way to do that.

In short, this DLC pack is pretty nice if you’re already interested in what it’s selling. However, I’m going to be very blunt: this is a nice bonus for existing SRW fans who already like the characters or want more units. It is not in any way a must-buy.

Not A Game-Changer

Super Robot Wars Y DLC Pack 2 is for people who already like the game and want more. The main appeal of this DLC pack is the additional units. And it does nothing to fix the annoying UI.

It doesn’t really change the experience of the game or add new branches to the story. As a result, I only recommend buying it if you’re already a Super Robot Wars Y fan and are interested in the new characters.

That said, if you loved the main title but missed playing as Ryoma Nagare or Kotetsu Jeeg, this pack is for you. The extra scenes are very fun. It’s always good to see returning favorites. And this is the first time The Brave of Legend Da-Garn and Getter Noir have appeared in Super Robot Wars proper.

If you aren’t already familiar with the new series, you probably won’t get a good grounding on them here. If you already know who the characters are, it’s nice to see them in action. Especially the alternate Ryoma piloting Getter Noir. The writing did some clever things with him since Ryoma is deceased in Super Robot Wars Y’s main timeline.

All in all, if you want more toys to play with in Super Robot Wars Y, DLC Pack 2 is a good purchase. Otherwise, feel free to wait for the next Super Robot Wars title.
