A New Step for SteamOS
Valve has announced that the company will start allowing third-party handhelds to license SteamOS. This step will begin with Lenovo’s new handheld device, Legion Go S.
At CES 2025, Lenovo revealed a special version of its upcoming Legion Go S handheld called “Powered by SteamOS.” As the name suggests, it uses the same operating system behind Valve’s Steam Deck. It’s a great choice for anyone who mainly builds their game library on Steam.
Valve announced in a blog post that, along with the launch of the Legion Go S, they’re developing a beta version of the operating system. This update aims to enhance the experience on other handheld devices, and users will be able to download and test it themselves. In other words, SteamOS is expanding beyond the Steam Deck to other handheld gaming PCs.
SteamOS is an excellent option for those with large Steam libraries, offering a smooth and user-friendly interface that enhances the handheld gaming experience. While it’s not a requirement for handheld PC gaming, it has gained a loyal following for its convenience and ease of navigation. What’s more, it won’t be limited to Steam Deck users for long, soon, anyone with a compatible handheld device will be able to install and enjoy it.
