PlayStation Plus Will Reward Its Subscribers With More Perks
Sony has announced exciting changes to its Sony Pictures Core app, which has replaced the Bravia Core app on PS5 and PS4. As part of the changes, PlayStation Plus Premium and Deluxe subscribers can now enjoy a new movie-themed perk as part of their membership. PS5 and PS4 owners can download the Sony Pictures app from the media tab, and from there, PS Plus Premium and Deluxe members will gain access to a curated catalog of “up to 100” Sony Pictures movies that can be streamed on demand.
This catalog will be ad-free and updated periodically and includes movies such as Looper, Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV, Elysium, and Resident Evil Damnation. Moreover, Sony Pictures Core members will have the exclusive opportunity to buy or rent select movies during an early access period as part of their paid subscription. For instance, Gran Turismo, a movie directed by Neill Blomkamp and loosely inspired by the true story of Jann Mardenborough, the teenage Gran Turismo player who went on to become a professional race car driver, is currently available through Sony Pictures Core in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
Other regions, including the UK, France, and Germany, will receive the film later this year. Sony has also announced that it plans to add more benefits to the Sony Pictures Core app in the future, such as curated anime content. The company has promised to share more details on these benefits at a later date. “This is just the beginning, and we plan to evolve the offerings and benefits of Sony Pictures Core over time, including a selection of hit anime content from Crunchyroll. We’re looking forward to more exciting things to come, so stay tuned,” Sony said in a PS Blog update.
Many observers have long suggested that Sony should grant PS Plus subscribers the ability to stream some movies as part of the subscription, so it’s great news that this is finally happening. Given Sony’s efforts to turn its gaming franchises into multimedia experiences, it makes more sense than ever to offer this perk. However, it’s worth noting that Sony announced this update only a few weeks after it increased the price of its PS Plus subscription from $120 to $160.Unfortunately, it seems that the PlayStation version of the app does not include one of the key features that Bravia and Xperia users have been able to enjoy.
