Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp Review
Advance Wars and its sequel have been recreated for the Nintendo Switch in Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp. The bundle is a faithful remake of the fun and frustration these games dished out.
In this game, war has broken out. You are an army fighting another army of a different color, because war. That’s just the reality of war though; a bunch of brave soldiers fighting for their leaders, maybe not even knowing why they are fighting in the first place. Except this game is fun.
The gameplay loop is a lot like Fire Emblem, but players are not bound to the same characters throughout the game. You command your forces and battle the enemy in a Rock, Paper, Scissors-type encounter. The cycle of what units beat what units are at the game’s core.
While the basics are simple, missions and lengthy battles can be tough. Some of the objectives, like eliminate all enemies, can be grueling and tedious. On the other hand, capture objectives can go by very quick and you might even find yourself needing every turn you can get. This can make pacing an issue at times.
While this is a remake, the gameplay remains relatively untouched. The visual upgrade holds the biggest improvements. Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is made on the Unity engine, bringing the units and locations to life in 3D.
