Sony Has Confirmed That The PS5 Can Play PS4 Games

Sonyโ€™s upcoming next-gen console, presumably named the โ€œPS5โ€, will be backwards compatible with the PS4, according to a recently published WIRED interview with PlayStation system architect Mark Cerny.

Since the PS5 is โ€œbased in part on the PS4โ€™s architecture, it will also be backward-compatible with games for that console,โ€ WIREDโ€™s report read. The report also revealed that the PS5 will still be able to play physical games and wonโ€™t be a digital-only console.

โ€œAs in many other generational transitions, this will be a gentle one, with numerous new games being released for both PS4 and the next-gen console,โ€ the report continued. When the reportโ€™s author asked if this meant that Death Stranding will be a cross-gen release, a spokesperson answered that the game is still planned for a PS4 launch โ€œbut Cernyโ€™s smile and pregnant pause invites speculation that it will in fact be a two-platform release.โ€

The release date or release window of Death Stranding still hasnโ€™t been publicly revealed yet and, with Sony bowing out of E3 2019, it is possible that the game could be coming out in the 2020s (which is when the next-gen Xbox and PlayStation consoles are expected to come out).
