Valve Cut Their Losses With Artifact

Proposed Layoffs To Involve Artifact Team

Valve recently talked about cutting a few jobs. Not like, 800 of them or anything, but enough. It turns some of that trimming is affecting Artifact. Richard Garfield, a renowned TCG designer, was one of the people Valve cut loose. Apparently Artifact isn’t doing quite as well as they had hoped.

Garfield spoke to Artibuff, an Artifact fan site, about the layoff situation. According to Garfield “we weren’t surprised by the layoff considering how rocky the launch was, the team was enthusiastic about the game and were confident that they had a good product but it became clear it wasn’t going to be easy to get the game to where we wanted it.”

Recent user stats put the TCG well down the list of Steam’s most played games. It almost never cracked the top 100, and the game is currently sitting at around 74 viewers on Twitch. There’s been little in the way of word from Valve, but this isn’t unusual. The question remains, what will they do next? Hopefully the massive gaming entity will be setting trends, instead of chasing them.
