A New Version Of The Skyrim Model, In Other Words
Fallout 76 is going to be a departure from the Fallout series in many ways. For example, the game will be getting free DLC and updates until the sun winks out like a busted light bulb. The heat death of the universe, as it were. In other words, Skyrim was an appetizer in terms of how long Bethesda will keep working on a given title.
None of this is hyperbole either, if Pete Hines is to be believed. When asked about how long Bethesda would continue to support Fallout 76, he said forever. He added that “I’m not being ironic. Like, forever.” This approach is bolstered by the game’s online focus, a strategy unseen in previous Fallout games.
In the same way that people are still playing Fallout 4, Skyrim and Morrowind, Hines believes that Fallout 76 will have an audience for untold years to come. To that end, the DLC schedule is rather nebulous at present. Fallout 76’s updates and DLC will be shaped by the community’s reaction to the game. Hines pointed to Fallout 3 as an example of how this works. Bethesda crafted the third DLC release based on player feedback. As an online-focused experience, there will be a lot of feedback for generating new content. Fallout 76 is coming to the PS4, PC and Xbox One this November.
