Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Casts Matt Mercer as Vincent

The Final Fantasy 7 Cast Will Include a Big Name in Voice Acting

Famed voice actor and Critical Role celebrity, Matt Mercer, is set to assume the role of Vincent Valentine in Square Enix’s highly-anticipated title, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. This exciting revelation came to light at New York Comic Con, where Mercer personally shared the news that he would be embodying the enigmatic, gun-wielding pseudo-vampire character, much to the delight of fans. The announcement was subsequently confirmed by the official Final Fantasy Twitter account.

Mercer, known for lending his voice to numerous iconic video game characters, such as Ganondorf in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, recounted an amusing anecdote related to his involvement with the Square Enix project. He disclosed that the studio initially played a prank on him by inviting him to record lines for an inconspicuous non-player character (NPC) in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. To his surprise, while recording, the script suddenly glitched and then faded into darkness. The script that emerged from the shadows wasn’t that of an ordinary NPC but, rather, the lines of Vincent himself. Mercer learned that Square Enix had a special role in mind for him, casting him as the iconic character.

It’s worth noting that Vincent won’t be a playable character in the sequel; instead, he will serve as a supporting character within the party, much like the role Red XIII played in the original Final Fantasy 7 Remake. In the original game, Vincent was a playable character capable of wielding handguns in battle and transforming into a formidable monster through his Limit Break ability.

As the release date of February 29 for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth draws nearer, fans are eagerly anticipating the game’s debut, and Square Enix is gradually revealing more about what’s in store. Among the newly disclosed details is the inclusion of fresh story content centered around Zack and a potential exploration of Sephiroth’s backstory, drawn from the mobile game Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis. Square Enix has been intriguingly cryptic in recent updates, even addressing a longstanding plot hole related to Aerith’s mysterious memories of future events in Final Fantasy 7 Remake, further heightening the anticipation surrounding this highly-anticipated sequel.
