New Subnautica Mod Brings the Gargantuan Leviathan to Life

We Can’t Wait to See This Thing in Its Full Glory

Subnautica is one of the scariest non-horror games out there, mostly because the deep sea is terrifying. Our own ocean is bad enough. An alien ocean? That’s even worse. And of all the horrifying creatures in the game, one of the scariest is the Gargantuan Leviathan, which you can’t run into… because the only specimens you find are already dead. The Gargantuan Fossil, found in the Lost River biome, is all that remains of a massive, leviathan-dwarfing creature that once swam the waters of Planet 4546B. The beast’s skull alone is almost 100 meters long–roughly the size of an entire Sea Dragon Leviathan. And now, a team of modders are preparing to resurrect it.

SpaceCatCreations have announced their intent to create a functional mod for the Gargantuan Leviathan, and they released this striking trailer to go with it. Currently, the mod is in the early stages, so the textures and animation are a bit rough and the creature has a tendency to clip through the sea floor. These small imperfections didn’t stop our blood from going cold when we saw exactly how big this critter is.

According to the preliminary builds distributed to streamers, SpaceCatCreations have included the option to scan the beast, and the in-game lore says its size ranges from 900 meters as a juvenile to 2000 meters as an adult. Add in its tendency to coil up on itself at the surface of the ocean and you’ve something that looks positively Lovecraftian. Also, it glows when it’s hunting you. Cthulhu’s got nothing on the Gargantuan Leviathan.
