New PlayStation State of Play Coming This Week

B-Sides and Rarities Edition

The next PlayStation State of Play is happening this Thursday! Great news, right? Time for the hype train to leave the station? All aboard? Actually, no. Sony has made it very clear that this presentation will be focused on smaller studios and little news items. PS4 titles, PSVR games, that sort of thing. All very chill.

According to the blog post, “there will be no PlayStation Studios updates in Thursday’s episode. There won’t be any updates around hardware, business, preorders, or dates either. On Thursday, our focus is squarely on showcasing some cool upcoming games coming to the broader PlayStation ecosystem.” We’ll see some updates on smaller third-party PS5 games, but nothing from the heavy hitters.

And that’s totally okay! We need a little time to talk about the indie games. PlayStation is still home to gobs of these smaller games, after all. This kind of disclosure is both refreshing and extremely necessary. Fans have a habit of revving up for huge news at every show, no matter what’s been promised ahead of time. Nintendo fans in particular have built a shrine-like dedication to Nintendo’s Directs, possibly since they drop news in no other fashion. Even without any huge games, surely this Thursday will have some juicy news in store for us.
