The PS4 Has Sold a Record-Breaking 110 Million Units

It’s PlayStation’s World and We’re Just Living in it

This generation of the supposed “console wars” has been a somewhat one-sided affair. While the PS3 and Xbox 360 were going back and forth for almost 10 years, Sony really pulled ahead of the competition with the release of the PS4. It was just announced today that the PlayStation 4 has sold more than 110 million units worldwide. Despite both of the new Microsoft and Sony consoles on the horizon, the PS4 has still done remarkably well. Over the last year, millions of PS4’s have been purchased.

These numbers are going to inevitably slow down as we inch closer to the release of the PS5 and Xbox Series X but this is still an impressive milestone, to say the least. To put these numbers in perspective, the PS4 has sold more than double that of the Xbox One and almost four times more than the Nintendo Switch. It is hard to argue that Sony has not been dominating this generation of consoles. At least from a business perspective.

Many have attributed to the lackluster performance of the Xbox One to the poor marketing that is had in its corner leading up to its launch as well as a lack of notable exclusives. While Xbox used to be in charge of titles like Halo and Gears of War, both of those franchises were unable to live up to their previous success. As those flagship games started to fade there was not much left to replace them.

While the Xbox Series X looks much more promising than the Xbox One, it will be hard to convince the legions of past Xbox 360 owners who jumped ship to return to Microsoft after Sony has gone above and beyond the call of duty. Needless to say, the end of 2020 is going to be very interesting.
