Dress Code, Flexible
A majority of fans appreciate when games and their developers make an effort to create an inclusive, welcoming, and free environment to express themselves. This is often done through character customization options like appearance design, clothing options, and in some cases relationship building. Final Fantasy XIV has often been considered a progressive leader among MMOs with its larger user base and inclusive options, like same-sex marriages. Soon, Square Enix will be taking another step forward by lifting the gender restrictions on the Final Fantasy XIV wedding outfits, effective in the next patch.
Up until now, wedding outfits would be determined by the character’s gender; a male character would wear a tuxedo and a female character would wear a gown, both made up of their respective clothing items like veils, bootlets, and tights for the gown, and boots, gloves, slacks, and tailcoats for the tuxedos. In the patch notes for the upcoming Patch 5.2, a section under Items notes that “the following items can now be equipped regardless of gender”, then lists all the wedding clothing items. Soon, players will be able to host and attend weddings with a bride and groom both in dresses, two brides in tuxedos, or any combination of couples and outfits.
While this is a welcome feature for all players, the game still has yet to extend this application to outfits outside the bonds of holy matrimony. Many pieces of clothing and armour are still gender specific. With the amount of clothing options in the game, it may take a while before we see a full library of shared outfits between male and female characters, if that is even a goal for the developers. Final Fantasy XIV is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
